In Gainesville Florida for the first time in 60 years a species of tropical bed bugs has been found. A family located in Brevard County first reported the tropical bed bug, and sent a sample to the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences researchers for identification. The researchers told the family that this is a rare tropical bed bug that had not been seen in over 60 years. The species of tropical bed bug found had not been confirmed in Florida since the 1930’s and 1940s. In the past pest control companies have kept bed bugs mostly in check with different chemical treatments, but for some reason this doesn’t seem to be the case with this species of tropical bed bug.
The conditions of Florida are so ideally suited for tropical bed bugs that scientist believe that other parts of Florida probably have the tropical bed bugs as well. The tropical bed bug is almost the identical to the common bed bug found in all 50 states, other than the fact that it reproduces at a faster rate. Brittany Campbell a UF/IFAS doctoral student in entomology says “This could mean that this species would develop more quickly, possibly cause an infestation problem sooner, and also could spread more rapidly,” Campbell went on to say that no studies have been conducted yet to confirm if this is true or not about the tropical bed bug species in question. Campbell recommends your first step to any bed bug infestation should be “If they do have a bed bug infestation, because they are so difficult to control, I ask that people consult a pest-control company for a professional service.” It’s important to deal with bed bug problems before they persists and turn in a much bigger problem.
