Wasps are summertime pests and recur each year even if you spend time destroying their nests. The homeowners suffer a lot of pain, both physically and mentally, because of these pesky bugs. So, how long do wasps live?

Generally, a worker’s wasp life can last from 12 to 22 days, while a queen can live up to a year. The wasp lifespan depends upon the number of species.

With that in mind, let us find out the lifespan of different types of wasps to understand them better.

Let’s go!

Paper Wasp Lifespan:

Paper wasps have three different caste systems, such as queens, workers, and males.

When the queen is fertilized and lays their eggs, they spend their winters in sheltered areas like underneath tree barks or crevices found in homes.

The queen selects the area and builds their nest in the spring. The eggs then hatch into larvae. Paper wasps can develop in stages. It can hold between 20 to 30 adults when a paper wasp nest matures.

The paper wasps can live long for around 3 to 4 months for worker wasps and 10 to 12 months for queen wasps.

Yellowjacket Lifespan:

These wasps can build their nests as per the size of the basketball. The nesting habits are similar to that of paper wasps. The queen finds shelter in the winter and builds a nest during springtime.

The queen can lay eggs throughout the summer because it can store sperms inside.

The Yellowjacket wasps can live long for around 2 to 3 months for worker wasps and 10 to 12 months for queen wasps.

How long do wasps live indoors?

The wasps cannot live longer indoors because they get isolated from their preferred resting location and other food sources. When they are staying indoors, they become dehydrated and start dying.

It means that the wasps staying indoors can live for few days or a week at the most. Also, it depends upon different species and the availability of resources that it needs to survive.

Some wasps can indefinitely live indoors, even beyond their normal cycle. You should worry if you find a wasp nest inside your house as it may create an infestation.

What Kills wasps?

Sparrows or ravens eat or kill the wasps. It causes them to die because wasps often fall prey to several parasites. It is challenging to estimate the prevalence of predators and parasites. The larger population of birds in your area will kill the wasps. Hence, you can assure the shorter lifespan of the wasps in and around your house.

Wasps can die of loneliness:

The wasps are social creatures. They will build many colonies based on how well they mate. Unmated wasps will eventually die off since they could not mate or create offspring. Any male or female wasps, unmated, will perish around late summer to early fall.
